The ‘Optical Assistant’ Now Launched!

I am delighted to share the launch of a fully interactive online learning resource for Optical Assistants. This has been a collaborative project over the past couple of years with the team at to develop this great new resource for optometry practice.

There are many roles and responsibilities for optical assistants in optometry practice, a lot of which are often learnt on the job. Particularly for those members of the team who enter a practice with no previous experience of optometry, this can be challenging and time-consuming. I have been working with the team at CPDpoints to develop a package of short modules in an interactive online resource to support optical assistants as they learn and develop in their roles.

The website contains a variety of bitesize modules covering a full range of aspects their role in practice. These include general subjects such as communication, appointment types and intervals, as well as practice administration such as GOS forms. There are modules on dispensing essentials such as frame selection and adjustment, how vision is corrected with glasses and basic concepts in dispensing. Contact lenses are also covered so that the front of house staff can help play their part in successful contact lens wear for the patient. And finally some of the basics of eye anatomy and disease are covered to increase staff awareness given their vital role in triaging. More modules will be added to the website so that users can benefit from continued learning.

All modules are delivered in short sections which can be worked through at a time and pace that suits the member of staff. They combine the relevant learning on each topic with a range of short activities and quizzes throughout in order to consolidate this learning. We will also be running short webinars which will compliment the content on the site. To access the full resource there is an annual subscription which is currently running at 50% off for an introductory period.
