Perhaps the most common referral made from optometry practices to the Hospital Eye Service is for cataract. The cataract treatment journey for the patient starts when they are examined by their optometrist, the possibility of treatment discussed and the referral made.  The level and quality of information in this examination and referral from the optometrist adds great clinical value when the hospital is vetting the referral for urgency and in carrying out a pre-operative assessment of the patient. Cataract services across the country have always been fully subscribed, but are now under greater pressure than ever following the COVID pandemic so community optometrists pay a key role in getting this first part of the patient journey off to the best start.

This webinar will be given by Stanley Keys who is a hospital optometrist based in Inverness, experienced in delivering hospital cataract assessment clinics. He will present an overview of the clinical assessment and considerations for possible referral from the perspective of the community optometrist. The more accurate and complete the optometry examination and referral the better – it provides the patient with a good understanding of the possible benefits and risks of cataract surgery in their particular case.

This webinar will cover:

  • Ocular examination of the patient specific to cataract assessment
  • General health other patient-based factors to consider
  • Factors to consider when weighing up whether to refer for possible surgery
  • The information that a complete referral contains

Whether you are fairly newly qualified as an optometrist or working at a more experienced level, this webinar will provide useful revision of this topic and hopefully plenty of clinical pearls.

This webinar will be delivered via Cisco Webex, with an invitation being sent in the 2 week prior to the event.

Each attendee will receive 2 CPD points and a certificate of attendance for their CPD record.
