Cataract assessment and treatment pathways are a truly multi-disciplinary effort in trying to deliver the highest quality of treatment to our patient. The volume of patients waiting for this service has always been high but is now under increased demands following the COVID pandemic.

An integral part of this service is the work of Ophthalmic Nurses who in the majority of departments play a key role in this pathway at the cataract assessment stage. Gaining an accurate and complete patient assessment prior to surgery is vital in bringing about the best possible outcome for the patient and minimising the risks of complications or errors for that patient. This course is also very relevant to optometrists who are developing into cataract assessment roles, or for those who work in practice and want to gain an insight into how cataracts are assessed for treatment.

Often cataract assessment work is learnt on the job, but hopefully this course will help to consolidate crucial practical experience with a detailed run through the different aspects of the assessment process. This course is probably most beneficial for those who are just starting in this role or who are wanting to consolidate their clinical knowledge.

This two part course is delivered online via Cisco Webex over two evening tutorials. Each participant will receive an electronic CPD certificate following the course for their professional portfolio along with a 40 page study guide covering all of the material covered on the course.

The training will cover the following:

Part 1 – Tuesday 20th August 7.00pm to 8.30pm

  • Referrals and vetting
  • An overview of the cataract assessment process
  • The key clinical features which might affect the safety and viability of surgery
  • Considerations when deciding if a patient requires surgery and consenting

Part 2 – Tuesday 10th September 7.00pm to 8.30pm

  • An overview of ocular biometry. What biometry is measuring and how to check the results for errors or problems
  • Possible complications of cataract surgery
  • A summary of the course

The course will be kept to small group sizes so they are fairly informal and promote discussion and questions, so that everyone gets the most out of it.

Cost per delegate = £95
